HISTORY OF SHREWSBURY DARWIN ROTARY CLUB

The idea for the formation of the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury Darwin came from within the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury by PDG Bob Toon, then District Extension Officer who saw the opportunity for a club that offered something different.

He was aided by other Shrewsbury Rotary Club members Roger Hudson and Past President John Simons and further helped by Bob’s two daughters, Trish Curtis and Alex Gore. They met with Val Povall, Sheila Allum and Paul Mott for the first time at the Lion Hotel long before the club was chartered. Shrewsbury became our Mother Club and Roger Hudson later transferred to Shrewsbury Darwin and was our President. Trish and Alex were founder members but later left for pastures new.

The idea was for the Club to be dual gender from the start and to appeal to people who could have a meeting that promised to finish sharp at 8.30am so that they could get to their place of work. The Rotary Club of Shrewsbury Darwin received its Charter on 1 February 1995 The Charter was presented by District Governor Ivor Rees at the Lord Hill Hotel on 29th March 1995.
